I am currently diving into a review for Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island, and I reached out to Alex Kanaris-Sotiriou, co-founder of Polygon Treehouse, for some insights into this fascinating game. Let’s dive into our conversation!
PS4Blog: Hey Alex! It’s great to have you back with us. How’s everything going on your end?
Thanks a lot! It’s been quite a whirlwind since we released our last indie game, Röki. I’ve truly enjoyed the creative journey of exploring folklore and mythology with Mythwrecked. This time around, instead of delving into Scandinavian folklore, we’re envisioning what it would be like if the Greek gods were alive in the modern world.
PS4B: Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island is set to launch on the Nintendo Switch on December 5th. What can you share about this new experience?
Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island is what we’d call an "explore-o-story" game. You take on the role of Alex, a backpacker who’s seeking a break from the hustle and bustle of modern life. However, a strange storm hits and you find yourself stranded on an island that’s been lost to time. Throughout your journey, you’ll forge friendships with the gods of Greek mythology, help them regain their memories, and figure out a way to get back home.
PS4B: When did you start working on this project, and how has it evolved from the initial concept to the final version?
The initial concept took shape about three years ago. The core ideas, like treasure hunting using radar and experiencing memory flashbacks, have been consistent from the start. One component that’s really developed over time is the “Story Sandbox”—conversations with the gods have gone through several iterations, and I’m thrilled with the final result. It allows players to feel like they’re truly part of a living story.
PS4B: Your previous game, Röki, received a physical release. Are there similar plans for Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island?
I’m a huge fan of physical releases, and it was fantastic to have one for Röki. I don’t have any updates right now about a physical edition for Mythwrecked, but it’s definitely something I hope we can make happen in the future.
PS4B: Thanks for the chat! Is there anything else you’d like to share before we wrap up?
Just a heartfelt thanks to everyone for tuning in! If you’re into cozy games, mythology, or adventure with a touch of mystery, we’d love for you to check out Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island. We hope it’s an indie game adventure that will stay with you!
