Path of Exile 2 is opening its doors today, and anticipation is through the roof, if early-access sales are anything to go by. Enthusiasm is so high that game director Jonathan Rogers has felt the need to address the eager fans, cautioning that they might encounter some login queues once the game officially launches.
In a candid video update, Rogers shed some light on the possible hiccups awaiting the more than one million players—all eager to dive into the game as soon as it goes live.
The recent tweet from Path of Exile shares, “We’ve just hit the million mark with Early Access redemptions. The outpouring of support for Path of Exile 2 has far surpassed our expectations. We just want to be transparent and let everyone know that we could face some queues over the weekend.”
Rogers explains, “This is undoubtedly fantastic news, but it does come with a caveat. We may face some queues this launch weekend. When we were planning, we hadn’t counted on a million players connecting all at once. We’ve ordered significantly more cloud capacity, and those servers will be up soon, though I’m concerned there might still be some backend issues.”
He adds, “Frankly, we’re unsure how our backend infrastructure will manage with over a million users. We’ve increased the number of data shards and maxed out our current resources, but we still don’t know what limits we’ll hit. We never anticipated such a huge turnout during early access.”
Concluding his message, Rogers extends his gratitude: “I just want to express my thanks for the faith you all have in this project. If we encounter server issues at launch, rest assured we’re doing everything possible to resolve them. We truly appreciate your support.”
While the idea of a login queue is a quintessential problem for online games, it’s a testament to how Path of Exile 2 has surpassed Grinding Gear Games’ already lofty expectations. It’s exciting to see especially since the team has delivered what seems to be a spectacular sequel to an already outstanding ARPG.
