Indie publisher Reforged Studios is making waves with its latest move, acquiring South African developer Yellow Lab Games, marking its third acquisition this year. While the financial details of the deal haven’t been disclosed, it’s clear that Yellow Lab will retain its independent operations, as reported by GI.biz. The studio is currently working on its highly anticipated roguelite RPG, Metavoidal, which is slated for release on Steam in the first quarter of 2025.
This acquisition comes right after Reforged’s August purchases of Ground Shatter and Extra Mile Studios, signaling a period of rapid expansion for the publisher.
Reflecting on the deal, Reforged CEO and founder Peter Van Der Watt shared his long-standing admiration for South Africa’s game development talent. “Growing up in South Africa, I’ve always been keenly aware of the amazing talent present in the country,” Van Der Watt stated. “Yellow Lab Games caught my eye a while ago, particularly after seeing the enthusiastic response to Metavoidal, their ambitious leap into PC and console gaming.”
Having left South Africa for Scotland in 2011 to establish his first game studio, Van Der Watt has been a vocal advocate for South African game development on the international stage. “Today, Reforged’s board shares my passion for the region’s potential. So when the chance came to bring David Hecker and his talented team into our fold, we jumped at it without hesitation,” he explained. “We’re thrilled to welcome some of South Africa’s finest game developers into the Reforged family and see this as just the start of a larger commitment to nurturing Africa’s exciting gaming industry.”
