Rec Room is a vibrant social VR platform bustling with a variety of first-party adventures designed for both friends and newcomers. Its latest addition, ‘Run the Block’, draws inspiration from the beloved Dreamcast classic, Jet Set Radio released in 2000.
This exciting multiplayer mini-game slipped onto the scene on December 11th and has already captivated over a million players. Much like Jet Set Radio, ‘Run the Block’ lets up to ten players compete in a thrilling urban race and parkour challenge. While the nostalgic rollerblades remain absent, players find themselves sprinting, jumping, and grinding through an intricate cityscape, complete with opportunities to leave their own graffiti mark.
Compared to previous years, Rec Room has been a bit conservative with its first-party releases. The platform’s last significant debut was ‘My Little Monster’, a charming pet farming simulator. Over the past year, Rec Room has also focused on incorporating branded content, featuring avatar packs from the ‘Monster High’ franchise and elements from Destiny, Bungie’s popular first-person shooter. Moreover, they’ve enhanced their creator tools, empowering users to craft detailed worlds and sell assets within the game’s creator economy. Notably, they’ve introduced full-body avatars, broadening the array of customization options available to players.
Recently, Rec Room expanded its reach by launching on the Nintendo Switch in November, adding to its diverse lineup of supported devices such as PC VR, Quest devices, the original PSVR, iOS, Android, Pico, Xbox, and PlayStation.
