A seasoned analyst has shared an intriguing prediction about the upcoming competition in the gaming console market, particularly if the Nintendo Switch 2 comes out in early 2025. According to Mat Piscatella from Circana, the PlayStation 5 might outpace Nintendo’s next-gen console in terms of sales within the United States. However, he points out that this could largely be due to potential supply issues as Nintendo grapples with meeting the soaring demand upon its new console’s debut.
In exploring whether the PS5 can trump the Switch 2 in U.S. sales, even if Nintendo manages to balance their supply and demand, Piscatella’s insights stop short of providing detailed reasons behind his forecast. He bases his speculation primarily on the anticipated supply bottlenecks and a possible late 2025 launch for the Switch 2. Nonetheless, it’s an interesting theory, particularly when considering what would happen if Nintendo overcame these potential hardware supply challenges.
Considering the PS5 is advancing further into its life cycle, it’s quite the bold claim. But should GTA 6 drop this year, there’s every expectation that Sony’s console might see a significant spike in interest and sales.
In a post on Bluesky, Piscatella elaborated, stating, “I anticipate Nintendo’s upcoming hardware device will sell around 4.3 million units in the U.S. in 2025, assuming it launches within the first half of the year. This figure would represent nearly a third of all video game console hardware units sold throughout the year, not counting PC portables. Nonetheless, the sales figures will naturally hinge on Nintendo’s manufacturing capacity and strategy. I still foresee the PlayStation 5 as topping the charts for hardware unit sales in the U.S. during that period.”
