There’s something new and exciting hitting Pokemon Go’s Unova Tour event that’s bound to draw fans’ attention.
Trainers, get ready for the spotlight debut of the “White Kyurem” and “Black Kyurem,” the iconic box mascots from Pokemon Black 2 and White 2. Both legendary Ice/Dragon types, these Pokemon are making their first appearance in Pokemon Go as part of the celebration of the fifth generation of Pokemon. If you’re in the Los Angeles area or New Taipei City, you can catch them live from February 21 to 23. And don’t worry if you’re not in those locations—these rare Pokemon will be available worldwide from March 1 to 2.
To capture Black and White Kyurem, you’ll need to step up to the challenge in raid battles with a difficulty that’s the second highest. Successfully conquering these raids awards you with either “Volt Fusion Energy” for Black Kyurem or “Blaze Fusion Energy” for White Kyurem. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen such a mechanic; last summer’s Pokemon Go Fest used a similar fusion system for “Dusk Mane Necrozma” and “Dawn Wings Necrozma.” For the fusion, a Kyurem and either Zekrom or Reshiram are essential, with the Kyurem’s stats and shiny status taking precedence. Interesting twists await those whose Kyurem knows Glaciate before fusion: if you pair it with Zekrom, expect “Freeze Shock,” while with Reshiram, you’ll unleash “Ice Burn.” We’re still waiting to hear from Niantic about whether event-caught Kyurem will come packing Glaciate to make fusion a breeze. Though energy initially is exclusive to those attending the in-person events, trainers worldwide can still battle remotely during the event weekend, but only local attendees will receive the precious energy.
But wait, there’s more! These legendary captures will come with a nostalgic touch—special backgrounds on their status screen. If Reshiram is your prize, it’ll have artwork inspired by Pokemon Black, while Zekrom will sport a Pokemon White theme. Kyurem will have the potential to carry either background, and if you fuse two Pokemon with contrasting backgrounds—say, a Zekrom teamed with a Black-themed background Kyurem—you’ll create a distinctive, third background.
Pokémon Go fans, this is one event you won’t want to miss.
