MultiVersus is saying goodbye to its online presence on May 30, 2025. This decision marks the end of the road for the free-to-play brawler that features a medley of beloved characters from Warner Bros.’ vast universe, such as those from DC Comics and Looney Tunes. Although the game sparked initial excitement, it struggled to build a lasting player base. By late 2024, this struggle had cost Warner Bros. over a whopping $100 million. However, fans will still be able to enjoy offline matches even after the shutdown, allowing for single-player and co-op gameplay.
Since its official release on May 28, 2024, MultiVersus has navigated the hazardous waters of live-service gaming—a landscape littered with the remnants of other ambitious projects like XDefiant. The team behind MultiVersus, Player First Games, saw a promising surge in player activity during early access in July 2022 and at the game’s full launch, but this spark eventually dimmed. With interest waning and financial losses mounting, the decision to unplug the servers seems inevitable.
Warner Bros. Games announced on its website that online servers for MultiVersus will cease on May 30, 2025, effectively delisting the game from digital storefronts across all platforms. Players should note that starting January 31, no real-money purchases will be available, though Gleamium and character tokens can still be spent until the close of Season 5.
Despite the online service ending, fans will find comfort in knowing they can continue playing offline. Post-May 30, MultiVersus enthusiasts can engage in battles against AI or team up with up to three companions for co-op matches, provided they download and log into the latest game version during Season 5, which kicks off on February 4.
As the curtain falls on MultiVersus online play, excited players eagerly anticipate the upcoming Season 5 update, packed with new rewards like Aquaman and Lola Bunny. Available through the Battle Pass and daily login rewards, this variety of unlockables presents a final opportunity to explore all MultiVersus has to offer.
Noteworthy for its vibrant roster, MultiVersus brings together iconic figures like Bugs Bunny and Batman in diverse landscapes including Batman’s Bat Cave and the Treefort from Adventure Time. Its variety of play modes—from intense 1v1 duels to chaotic 4-player melees and strategic 2v2 matches—catered to all fighting style preferences. These features, combined with full cross-platform play, highlighted the game’s potential, even as its online journey comes to an end.
