ROBOBEAT, crafted by Simon Fredholm and Kwalee, bursts onto the PlayStation 5 scene as a thrillingly fast-paced rhythm-infused roguelike shooter. Join us as we dive into what makes this game an exceptional addition to your gaming library!
Step into the shoes of the renowned bounty hunter Ace, whose mission is nothing short of electrifying: take down the wild and whimsical robot-showman, Frazzer. But it won’t be straightforward—not when you’re navigating his bizarre techno amusement ground where shooting to the beat is the name of the game. Staying still isn’t an option here; staying in motion is crucial for survival! With procedurally generated levels thrown your way, you’ll need to stay sharp and alter your strategy as you advance. Choose a soundtrack that matches your style to really get in sync with the beat and immerse yourself in the fun.
Having explored other rhythm-shooters like Metal: Hellsinger on PlayStation 5 and BPM: Bullets Per Minute on the Nintendo Switch, I was eager to see how ROBOBEAT would perform on Sony’s latest console. Interestingly, this game includes a crossover with BPM: Bullets Per Minute, featuring bonus tracks from that game alongside tunes from DUSK and ULTRAKILL.
Your journey begins with moving Ace using the left analog stick, while the right stick lets you look around and aim. You’ll dash by clicking the left stick, and the X button handles jumping and double-jumping. Sliding is mapped to the Circle button, and a ground slam during a jump is executed by clicking the right stick. Combat uses the L2 button for firing your left weapon, while R2 is for your right, all in sync with the beat to rack up combos! The Square button allows for parrying, whereas charging weapons requires a press of the Triangle button. Utilize the R1 button for any assigned utilities.
Your arsenal will have some exciting choices. The classic Revolver offers quick attacks with a short beat cooldown and can deliver headshot crits. If up-close damage is more your style, the Flux shotgun is your friend, packing a punch with a longer cooldown. The Contact adds strategic depth by inflicting collateral damage on nearby foes, while the Ping Pong gun promises explosive fun with every third shot!
Defeating foes and clearing rooms earns you Blips, the in-game currency for buying gear and unlocking new challenges in future runs. You’ll encounter different room types like the shop, data-chip, parkour, and target rush rooms, each offering unique challenges. But before you can enjoy their benefits, you need the right blueprints, which must be safely returned to your workbench.
And for the trophy hunters, there’s good news! ROBOBEAT offers a complete trophy list, including a coveted Platinum. With 24 Bronze, 8 Silver, and 5 Gold trophies, getting that Platinum will take you through various tasks such as entering new areas, defeating bosses, achieving rapid target eliminations, parrying, and much more. If you’re looking for guidance, definitely check out the ROBOBEAT Trophy Guide.
ROBOBEAT is a hectic and exhilarating FPS for rhythm game enthusiasts. Hunting down Frazzer means surviving his quirky domain and shooting to the beat of a captivating soundtrack. Keep those feet moving! Featuring 38 songs plus exclusive tracks from BPM: Bullets Per Minute, DUSK, and ULTRAKILL, this game is sure to get you grooving. Mark your calendars for ROBOBEAT’s launch on PlayStation 5, priced at $19.99.
Can you keep up with the rhythm and claim victory over the eccentric Frazzer? Only time and a multitude of beats will tell!
