Xbox gamers have some exciting news to look forward to as more of their favorite titles are making their way to new platforms. This time, two iconic real-time strategy games are in the spotlight: Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition and Age of Mythology: Retold. According to an announcement from Xbox on Tuesday, Age of Empires 2 is set to debut on PlayStation 5 sometime in spring, while fans will have to wait until March 2025 for Age of Mythology: Retold.
Both games are expected to fully support cross-play, allowing Xbox, Windows PC, and PlayStation 5 players to enjoy smooth gameplay together. Alongside this, all platforms will receive updates at the same time. Additionally, PlayStation users will not miss out on the upcoming expansion titled Immortal Pillars for Age of Mythology: Retold, which includes a refreshed version of the Chinese faction.
The franchise, including the beloved Age of Empires and its spin-off, Age of Mythology, is managed by World’s Edge. This team, under Xbox Game Studios, collaborates with other developers to revitalize classic titles while also working on new entries in the series. Over recent years, fans have seen Definitive Editions of Age of Empires, Age of Empires 2, and Age of Empires 3, as well as the launch of Age of Empires 4 and the ambitious remake of Age of Mythology.
Reflecting on Age of Mythology: Retold, I noted in my review, “The game excels as a remarkable remake, but more importantly, it reinvigorates the series, setting the stage for future expansions and updates. I’m eager to invest countless more hours into Age of Mythology: Retold and am excited for the new Pantheons set to release in the upcoming months.”
In another exciting development, Xbox has revealed that Playground Games’ Forza Horizon 5 will be joining the PlayStation 5 lineup sometime in Spring 2025. Fans are also anticipating Bethesda Softworks and MachineGames’ Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which is expected to arrive on PlayStation 5 in the first half of this year.
Xbox’s strategic expansion shows no signs of slowing as it continues bringing its games to PlayStation and Nintendo platforms, aiming to broaden its market reach. Many forthcoming releases from Xbox’s first-party studios will launch simultaneously on PlayStation 5, including id Software’s DOOM: The Dark Ages and Ninja Gaiden 4 from Xbox Game Studios Publishing.
Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has expressed a desire to keep pioneering new hardware innovations, suggesting that these advancements should be the compelling reason for gamers to choose Xbox over other platforms.
