Rumors are buzzing around Square Enix and its potential plans for the Nintendo Switch 2. While details are still scarce on what exactly we can expect from Nintendo’s next console, there are strong indications that both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth might be part of its lineup when the system finally hits shelves. Word on the street is that the Switch 2 isn’t too far off, so it’s just a matter of time before we start getting official announcements.
Nintendo has slated a Switch 2 Direct for Wednesday, April 2, which should shed some light on important details like the console’s release date, price, and initial game offerings. It’s anticipated that soon thereafter, Nintendo’s third-party collaborators, including Square Enix, will start rolling out announcements about their Switch 2 game lineups.
As it stands, Square Enix hasn’t officially announced any projects for the Switch 2, but noted insider NateDrake, aka Nate the Hate, who’s been reliable in the past, suggests that both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth are on the cards for the upcoming console. According to his insights shared on Resetera, these two titles are top priorities for Square Enix, while Final Fantasy 16 doesn’t seem to be part of the Switch 2 plan, at least for now.
Given that Final Fantasy 16 sales didn’t quite hit forecasted numbers, you’d think Square Enix might want to include it in the Switch 2’s library. But when you consider the longstanding popularity of Final Fantasy 7, it makes strategic sense to focus on sure winners like the Remake and Rebirth. The Switch 2’s adoption of these titles could hint at the console being mightier than anticipated, although some compromises might be necessary to get these games running smoothly on the new hardware. Until fans see the actual gameplay, the exact performance remains an intriguing question.
Apart from these rumored games, confirmed releases for the Switch 2 consist of some indie entries, with a new Mario Kart being the only major title Nintendo has officially announced. We can expect more revelations about the console’s gaming slate during the forthcoming Nintendo Switch 2 Direct in early April.
