If you’ve ever dabbled in a Hazelight Studios game, you’re probably familiar with the intriguing personalities, backstories, and motivations that they craft for you and your co-op buddy. These elements combine to create memorable moments as each character’s story unfolds.
In keeping with this trend, Hazelight Studios is introducing two new protagonists in their latest creation, Split Fiction, launching on March 6 for PS5. You’ll step into the shoes of Mio and Zoe, two unpublished authors who couldn’t be more different from each other. Their journey begins at Rader Publishing Headquarters, lured by the promise of a publishing deal. However, things take a turn for the worse, trapping them inside a simulation of their stories. Your mission? Help them escape! Let’s delve deeper into these characters so you can decide who to play as when you get your hands on the game.
Meet Mio Hudson, a science fiction author who’s reserved and decisive with a realist outlook. Raised in the city by her father, Mio’s been hustling to stay afloat these past couple of years. She doesn’t crave the spotlight; she just wants financial stability. Her stories, fueled by her passion for sci-fi, take readers into neon-drenched cyberpunk cities, ruthless weapon plants of the future, and the icy expanse of outer space.
As you navigate the simulations, expect Mio’s love for sci-fi to shine through in her skills. She may transform into a gravity-defying ninja wielding a razor-sharp energy sword, don an advanced exosuit to control drones, or dual-wield laser blasters in slick combat gear.
On the flip side, we have Zoe Foster, a fantasy author who’s the epitome of charisma and empathy. She’s an optimistic extrovert, determined to prove to her family that she’s not a failure. For Zoe, landing a publication deal is the key to solving all her problems. Her fantasy works include tales of towns overrun by trolls, struggles against impending ice ages in dense forests, and epic battles to save the last dragons from extinction.
Zoe’s fondness for the fantastical comes alive in the game, where you might see her as a magical shapeshifter flying like a fairy, wielding an enchanted sword atop a dragon amidst an ancient battle, or gliding between floating isles with a magical kite.
These characters are as different as night and day, but they’ll need to put aside their differences, uncover their own hidden truths, and learn that relying on each other’s strengths is the only way to break free from the simulation. Their unique dynamic promises an engaging co-op experience that revolves around teamwork and friendship.
At The Game Awards in December, Josef Fares shared an interesting tidbit: the names Mio and Zoe hold special meaning for him, as they are inspired by his daughters!
Now, the big question for you and your gaming partner: who will take on the role of Mio, and who will step into Zoe’s shoes?
In traditional Hazelight fashion, The Friend’s Pass is back. This feature allows one game owner to invite a friend to join the mission online, free of charge. They’re even looking to introduce crossplay, making it seamless to game with friends across different platforms.
Mark your calendars for March 6, 2025—Split Fiction will be making its way to PlayStation 5. Just remember, to make the most of The Friend’s Pass, you’ll need to install it, maintain a steady internet connection, and have an applicable platform account. One user has to own the complete game for both players to enjoy the full experience.
