Meta-owned Downpour Interactive is gearing up for a major 2.0 update to “Onward,” their tactical military simulation shooter, marking the biggest update the game has seen in quite some time. It’s been almost a year since any significant updates were released, so this news is a bit overdue but very welcome.
Despite a quieter year after the release of the ‘Mercenary’ update in February of 2024, which expanded the game with a PvE mode and some graphical enhancements, “Onward” has not been left in the dust. Downpour Interactive is preparing to roll out their 2.0 update, which Meta recently teased in a blog post, promising “its biggest update ever” filled with loads of new content.
Players can look forward to what’s being described as “a massive graphical overhaul” featuring upgrades across weapons and utilities. Additionally, there’s anticipation for a brand new Operator system introducing 20 fresh characters, alongside exciting new map content. More details about this eagerly awaited 2.0 update are said to be coming our way soon.
This update comes on the heels of some challenging times for both the game and its creators, including significant layoffs at Downpour Interactive in 2023. The founder and CEO, Dante Buckley, who spearheaded the company since its inception in 2015, left just a month before those layoffs hit.
For those unfamiliar, “Onward” first entered the scene through Early Access on Steam back in 2016, followed by its release on the original Oculus Quest in 2020. It’s well-loved for its realistic squad-based gameplay and its meticulous attention to replicating real-world weaponry.
Curious to see more? You can find additional information on “Onward” on the Horizon Store page for Quest 2 and newer systems, as well as on Steam for PC VR headsets, where the game is typically listed at $25.
