Sony has just made an exciting announcement: starting next month, they’re permanently slashing the price of the PlayStation VR 2. This move brings the PS5 and PC-compatible VR headset down to a more wallet-friendly $400.
Initially priced at $550 when it launched nearly two years ago, the PSVR 2 hasn’t received much spotlight lately—not even during Sony’s recent State of Play. However, starting in March, the price drops to $400 in the US, €450 in Europe, £400 in the UK, and ¥66,980 in Japan.
What’s particularly interesting is that this new pricing applies to both the basic PSVR bundle—which includes the headset, two Sense controllers, and headphones—and the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle, originally priced at $600 back in February 2023.
While the PSVR 2 has been subject to temporary sales in the past, offering even deeper discounts, the upcoming price reduction is set to make it more accessible on a permanent basis. For instance, in November 2024, Sony had slashed the price of the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle to just $350, suggesting that further deals could be on the horizon.
In announcing the new pricing, Sony has highlighted several high-quality PSVR 2 games, both current and upcoming. Titles such as Skydance’s Behemoth, Metro Awakening VR, and Alien: Rogue Incursion are in the spotlight, along with future releases like Aces of Thunder, Dreams of Another, Hitman World of Assassination, and The Midnight Walk. However, it’s worth noting that Sony’s support for the PSVR 2 hasn’t been as robust as one might hope.
So far, only a few first-party titles have been launched for the PSVR 2, including Horizon Call of the Mountain and VR modes for Gran Turismo 7 and Resident Evil games. This contrasts starkly with the lineup available for the original 2016 PSVR, which boasted games like Astro Bot Rescue Mission, Blood & Truth, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, and many more.
Nevertheless, Sony has made efforts to broaden the PSVR 2’s appeal to more players by releasing a $60 PC Adapter last August. This handy addition allows players to connect their VR headset to a PC and enjoy a plethora of SteamVR games, such as Half-Life: Alyx and Fallout 4 VR. This marks the beginning of Sony’s gradual separation of the PSVR 2 from being tied solely to the PS5.
With further discounts likely on the horizon, similar to deals seen during the holiday season, it’s plausible that we might witness a boost in year-over-year sales. If we were to experience another substantial discount like the one on last Black Friday, the PSVR 2 could potentially drop to just $232. At that pricing tier, it would certainly become a tempting addition even for those who might consider it a mere “stocking stuffer.”
Update (February 27th, 2025): A correction has been made regarding the Euro price, which was initially listed as €550 but is actually €450.
