Every so often, I remind myself that this space is a blog—a platform where I can share insights from my career as a VR developer, entrepreneur, and blogger. I hope these reflections offer guidance to others who might face similar challenges. Recently, I’ve adopted a fresh approach that I’m eager to discuss today.
If you’re familiar with me, you know how deeply I’m invested in Virtual Reality, or as Meta now frames it, Mixed Reality. This enthusiasm often drives me to juggle multiple projects—blogging, attending events, tackling contract work, and even attempting to craft my own products. Initially, I had a habit of accepting every opportunity that crossed my path. Although this provided a wide range of experiences and accomplishments, it also led to stress and diluted focus, hampering meaningful impact.
A few months back, my thoughts began shifting, thanks in part to books like “Antifragile” and personal experiences. I concluded that my work should be based on a guiding principle: prioritizing fewer, yet more impactful endeavors over numerous trivial ones.
This realization also transformed my social media habits. I used to share countless XR-related articles on platforms like Twitter/X because I genuinely wanted to keep the community informed. Yet, I noticed these posts often fell flat, garnering little to no engagement—which meant they weren’t being read. This was a clear indication I was spending time creating content that wasn’t serving its audience.
Understanding this, I shifted my strategy. I began concentrating on sharing only the most critical content and put more effort into crafting engaging posts. I’m aiming to inform and interest rather than ignite contentious debates, aligning with the platform’s algorithmic incentives. This approach yields more interaction and meaningful connections.
This shift extends to my blogging practices as well. In the past, I pressured myself to write at least one post a week, even if it lacked substance. However, these shallow articles didn’t benefit anyone—they didn’t boost my following, reputation, or professional connections. Now, I choose depth over frequency. A well-crafted article can lead to broader recognition and connection-building, much like my detailed post on Android XR, which gained traction across online publications.
In the developer realm, I’ve realized that one substantial project often outweighs several smaller ones. A big project offers richer learning experiences and can elevate your professional standing. When I worked on VRROOM, a VR platform for concerts, it was far more beneficial than multiple smaller gigs combined.
Balancing fewer projects allows me to devote time to quality, which naturally leads to greater satisfaction and value for everyone involved. Prioritizing quality over quantity has also prompted me to reassess my worth, aligning compensation with the expertise built over a decade in this industry. Although I still work extensively, this approach is more sustainable.
True success also demands consistency. Going viral or delivering one standout piece might feel rewarding, but it rarely sustains a long-term career. You have to consistently engage and deliver to cultivate an interested, dedicated audience. This principle applies to networking too. Real connections often require repeated interactions, transforming acquaintances into professional relationships.
For lasting career impact, I focus on tasks with potential long-term benefits. These strategic moves are essential for advancing my career trajectory, whether it’s working on significant projects or positioning myself for opportunities that can lead to major developments like becoming a manager or gaining media exposure.
In sum, concentrate on fewer, more substantial projects to enhance both present and future outcomes. You’ll find that such focus brings greater value and satisfaction while reducing stress.
Hopefully, my reflections resonate with you, offering some value in refining your work approach. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments or engage with this post—and if you do, add your own personal touch!
