In recent years, DC Comics has been perceived as the more somber and serious of the two major comic book publishers, largely due to the gritty Dark Knight films and the intense, dramatic narratives in the Snyderverse. However, DC’s universe actually has a vibrant mix of dynamic characters, with many superheroes who champion truth, justice, and optimism. Yet, when it comes to NetherRealm’s Injustice series, that brighter side of DC isn’t really showcased.
Set in an alternate reality where Superman loses control after inadvertently causing Lois Lane’s death, the Injustice series dives into some very dark themes. True to NetherRealm’s style, it delivers plenty of jaw-dropping moments and stirring fatalities. If NetherRealm were to venture into creating a Marvel fighting game, there’s no doubt it could match or even surpass the darkness of Injustice.
Looking at the Marvel universe, you’ll find no shortage of villains with sinister backgrounds. While Batman’s enemies, especially The Joker, are often held up as the pinnacle of villainy, Marvel’s rogues’ gallery isn’t far behind. There’s the Red Skull, a ruthless follower of Hitler and mastermind behind Hydra; Baron Zemo, who engineered the Masters of Evil and killed Captain America’s son; Ultron, who aspires to wipe out humanity; and Doctor Doom, who once became all-powerful and tore apart Reed Richards’ family. Each of these villains demonstrates layers of evil that could rival even the darkest in DC.
Among Marvel’s more contemporary yet terrifying villains is The Maker, an evil incarnation of Reed Richards from the Ultimate Universe. He attempted to take over a reality where superheroes never existed. With such characters, NetherRealm would have a treasure trove of compelling antagonists for an exciting game narrative.
Given the chance to craft a Marvel game, NetherRealm could allow some of Marvel’s most iconic heroes to showcase their grittier sides. While the MCU occasionally highlights darker facets of its heroes, the comics contain a multitude of characters who don’t shy away from bloody combat. Heroes like The Punisher, Wolverine, Daredevil, and even Spider-Man, when he unleashes his full power, are capable of taking down opponents with brutal efficiency.
A NetherRealm Marvel game could bring these darker elements to the forefront within its gameplay while still ensuring it aligns with a teen rating. Marvel might be cautious about extending the boundaries too far, but with NetherRealm’s deft storytelling, they could deliver a narrative and action-packed game experience that mirrors the tonal darkness seen in Injustice, while still staying true to Marvel’s universe and characters.
