Available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, Wanderstop sets your goal to simply brew a decent cup of tea, but there’s much more to it. As I gear up to delve into this intriguing new release, my excitement is bubbling over for several reasons. First off, Wanderstop marks the debut of Ivy Road, a studio spearheaded by Davey Wreden. Gamers know Wreden as the genius behind The Stanley Parable and The Beginner’s Guide, both renowned for their unique storytelling and creative flair. On first glance, Wanderstop might appear as just another “cozy game”—the kind where you leisurely absorb delightful vibes while managing a business, such as a tea shop. However, with Wreden at the helm, I’m convinced there’s an unexpected twist awaiting players. That’s what I’m here for: the surprise element, the moments when a game defies expectations and pulls the rug out from under you.
Another factor fueling my anticipation is the diversity of critical reactions the game has provoked. From moderately positive to glowing reviews, the range of opinions intrigues me (though I’ve opted to steer clear of these reviews prior to my own playthrough to maintain an element of surprise). In a landscape where mainstream games often face uniform critique, spotting a title with such varied feedback suggests it’s pushing boundaries or trying something new.
Now, this plethora of responses doesn’t guarantee that I’ll fall in love with Wanderstop. There’s a chance I might not enjoy it, but I suspect that any shortcomings will at least be creatively intriguing. Personally, I’d rather engage with a game that’s bold but flawed than one content with mediocrity masked as success. Of course, there’s also every chance I may end up truly adoring Wanderstop. This weekend, I intend to dive in and figure out where I stand. However, I must admit, the excitement before embarking on a game journey—where you’re clueless about what lies ahead—is always a thrilling stage in itself. — Carolyn Petit
