If you’ve ever dreamed of diving into No Man’s Sky as a dinosaur-loving enthusiast who somehow also snagged a date with Jennifer Aniston, today’s your jackpot! Hello Games has just launched the Relics update, introducing the exciting new feature of big alien fossil collection.
This update follows the substantial Worlds update that dropped in January, bringing “billions of new stars and planets,” along with gigantic gas giants and peculiar flying squid creatures that aren’t too pleased with overfishing.
The Relics update, as laid out in a recent blog post and detailed in the accompanying video, introduces the intriguing concept of space paleontology. Imagine channeling your inner Ross Geller from Friends, minus the moody bouts and the notorious sandwich meltdown. You’ll embark on a galactic journey to “discover hundreds of unique bones,” piecing them together in your very own museum. Can you get cheeky by swapping bum bones and skulls, tricking No Man’s Sky’s array of quirky aliens into believing they descend from a less-than-flattering race called the Fartongueians? Who knows? It might be worth a shot!
But hold on; there’s more! The update also introduces the mysterious Reanimated Guardians, “massive stone lifeforms” that protect planetary fossil sites from would-be trespassers. They bear more resemblance to impressive stone robots than silly creatures, debunking my wild theory. You’ll also encounter Living Stone Sentries and Colossal Stone Effigies, vestiges of ancient alien civilizations keeping watch over relic worlds.
Expect to see living fossils too, like Titanic Boneworms and skeletal creatures on planets abundant in bones or within purple star systems. Plus, Fossil Collectors aboard Space Stations are open for business — sell your fossil creations or trade bones for their extensive fossil offerings, or even try your hand at bone-cooked recipes.
Don’t forget to enlist in the Galactic Paleontology Society through the new expedition Relics introduces. Participants are rewarded with a sentient rock jetpack, the option to transform your appearance into sentient rock, and a skeletal animal buddy.
