nDreams, the creative team behind the arena shooter sensation FRENZIES, has shared some big news. This popular free-to-play game will officially exit early access later this year, but there’s a bit of a twist—it’s not making its way to PSVR 2 as initially intended.
In a recent statement, nDreams explained their decision, hinting that there’s more to look forward to for PS VR2 fans. “We’re thrilled to announce that FRENZIES will remain free-to-play when it concludes its Early Access phase later this year! Since we first launched on Meta Quest, the positive feedback from players has been overwhelming. They’ve embraced FRENZIES’ unique and chaotic charm, and as we transition out of Early Access, we want to build on that excitement.
To ensure FRENZIES reaches its full potential, we’ve chosen to concentrate all our efforts on the Meta Quest platform and will no longer release FRENZIES on PS VR2. We understand that fans awaiting its PS VR2 debut might be disappointed, but rest assured, we have more thrilling PS VR2 news on the horizon.
Stay tuned for exciting updates in the coming weeks as we share our Early Access roadmap,” the statement concluded.
Since its initial release on Quest 2 and above in October 2024, FRENZIES has delivered exhilarating arena shooting action, complete with a diverse array of weapons and game modes, all finely tuned for VR gameplay.
While it’s a letdown for PSVR 2 users who were eager for its launch, the decision makes strategic sense for nDreams. The past year has seen a surge in younger users flocking to the Quest platform, bolstered by the introduction of the $300 Quest 3S. This has proven to be a fertile ground for free-to-play games.
Samantha Ryan, Meta’s VP of Metaverse Content, remarked in February, “We foresee free-to-play models becoming a viable approach for more developers. Though traditionally reliant on premium apps, I believe both models will coexist harmoniously.”
In today’s challenging economic climate, nDreams seems keen on optimizing their efforts by focusing on the largest potential player base. Recently, the UK-based studio restructured by consolidating nDreams Studio Orbital and nDreams Studio into a new entity, ‘Compass,’ following layoffs, suggesting a streamlined approach.
As one of the pioneers in XR game development, nDreams has consistently delivered impressive VR experiences like Vendetta Forever, Power Wash Simulator VR, Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord, Synapse, Fracked, Little Cities, and Phantom: Cover Ops, to name just a few.
