Rumor has it that Ubisoft, the renowned French publisher, is diving into the battle royale arena with a new project that aims to compete with Apex Legends.
According to Insider Gaming, this new endeavor, known under the codename Scout, bears a strong resemblance to Respawn and EA’s popular title. So much so that at one point, early artwork for Scout was nearly indistinguishable from an Apex Legends thumbnail. Moreover, there are whispers of characters in Scout that closely mirror those seen in Apex Legends, hinting at how closely Ubisoft is drawing inspiration.
The rationale behind this move seems clear: Ubisoft sees an opportunity to attract players from Apex Legends, a game that has reportedly faced some financial setbacks recently, as acknowledged by Electronic Arts themselves. A source familiar with both projects mentioned, “The aim here seems to be to capitalize on Apex’s dwindling player base and the notion that the market has room for another hero-driven battle royale.”
This isn’t Ubisoft’s first attempt at capturing the battle royale audience. The company previously launched Hyperscape in 2020, although that venture lasted only 18 months before it was discontinued. Additionally, Ubisoft is fresh off the decision to shut down XDefiant, another free-to-play shooter, by the end of 2024.
Meanwhile, fans of Apex Legends have something to look forward to, as a revamped version, dubbed Apex Legends 2.0, is anticipated to hit the scene sometime after April 2026.
