“Soul Paint” offers a unique VR experience where 3D drawing meets personal reflection. Unveiled at SXSW 2024, this project by Sarah Ticho and Niki Smit features narration by Rosario Dawson. The idea is to let participants “discover, meet, and choreograph their own emotions” using immersive technology. You become a 3D figure in a mystical space, with tools to draw on this expansive canvas and even onto your virtual self.
Incorporating body-mapping with virtual reality, the creators describe it as a way to delve into and become aware of our emotions. The goal is to “foster empathy and social connectedness by witnessing others’ lived experiences.” At the end, you can share these feelings with others.
I had the chance to try a 20-minute session at the NewImages Festival 2025 through the XR Market. It starts with a profound question: “Where are you feeling?” Initially, I was unsure, but Soul Paint soon took on a more spiritual tone. In this almost celestial world, you’re gently encouraged to express yourself physically.
What follows is a soothing, relaxing experience that feels like a journey of self-discovery. I’m no artist, but I created what I needed in that moment. You can draw on your virtual body and leave a voice message at the end, which can be saved for others to experience. It’s a beautiful concept, allowing you to share emotions when words fall short.
Soul Paint serves as a VR mirror for introspection. Though it’s a brief, linear experience, it offers a strong sense of embodiment and personal freedom, which I found appealing. It’s an alternative way to communicate, lacking depth in a traditional sense, yet enriched with thoughtful, meditative elements. I’m hopeful we’ll see more innovations like this.
As of now, there’s no word on a home release for Soul Paint, but we’ll keep you updated with any new developments.
