Days Gone Remastered is arriving for PlayStation 5 on April 25, and it promises to deliver the ultimate gaming experience with enhanced visuals and modes tailored for both the PS5 and PS5 Pro. Fans can look forward to new game modes such as Horde Assault, Permadeath, and Speedrun, which will also be available on PC via the Broken Road DLC. Whether you’re diving into Days Gone for the first time or jumping back on your trusted Drifter bike, there’s a treasure trove of content waiting for you. One of the standout features in Days Gone Remastered is the introduction of Horde Assault, an arcade-style survival mode. Before you plunge into the details, make sure to watch the gameplay trailer below.
What is Horde Assault mode?
Horde Assault is all about fresh, intense gameplay, pushing your skills to the limit as you aim for high scores and survival against ever-growing hordes of Freakers and other formidable foes like Breakers, Reachers, and Rager bears. The game transforms into a brutal battleground where surviving is your only goal as enemies increase in strength the longer you hold out. The mode encapsulates the essence of "This World Comes For You," featuring Days Gone’s open-world experience uniquely. Ready your gear and show those Freakers who’s in charge.
You start off in Horde Assault by landing in Cascade with just a sidearm. Your mission? Survive the initial wave of Freakers and make it to your Drifter bike, essential for navigating the expansive terrain. Keep an eye out for Supply Boxes scattered across the map, as they are crucial for obtaining powerful weaponry—like the all-new flamethrower not found in Story mode—that will significantly boost your survival chances. These Supply Boxes offer randomized weapons with each new game start.
As you battle for survival, refuel your resources and gain extra XP by completing Side Jobs, which are vital for staying in the fight. Running out of ammo with hordes of up to 800 Freakers on your tail is far from ideal. Indeed, there are more hordes than before… and it’s not going to be easy. Survive 30 minutes on any map, and you’ll face the Ultimate Horde—an endless wave of Freakers that refuses to back down. Words can only say so much; it’s best experienced in action.
Survive
Climbing the levels in Horde Assault unlocks exclusive rewards like never-playable-before characters, new patch cosmetics, and unique Injectors that can significantly alter your playing experience.
Long-time Days Gone players will remember how Injectors work, offering boosts and making gameplay more dynamic. The system extends into Horde Assault with new modifiers. Throughout your journey to becoming a Legendary Survivor, you’ll collect 24 unique Injectors—half offering positive boosts but upping the challenge, the other half providing gameplay benefits but at the cost of a lower score.
Without giving too much away, let’s peek at a couple of Injectors:
-
Exploding Freakers: Once a Freaker goes down, it explodes. Handy for reducing those numbers when hordes are stacking up against you.
- Wanted: Start the game at the maximum heat level. As time goes on, the survival challenge ramps up dramatically, and this Injector gets you into the thick of it from the get-go—a real test for the toughest of the tough.
As you tackle Horde Assault, you’ll progress along a Reward path, spanning 35 levels with rewards such as Injectors, character skins, and patch cosmetics. The new roster even includes six fresh characters straight from the Days Gone universe, featuring O’Brian, Lisa, fan-favorite Skizzo, and more.
Familiar with patches from the 2019 Challenges? They’re back, now serving a purely cosmetic purpose to adorn Deacon and show off to your buddies. Enhanced Photo Mode has never been more useful. After you earn them, these patches carry over into the main story as well. Beyond the Reward path, players can earn bonus rewards during the Reputation Phase by hitting target scores across four regions. We won’t spoil everything, but one highly-requested item concerning your bike is part of the deal.
Horde Assault is envisioned as endgame content, yet you can jump in as soon as you start Days Gone Remastered. If you’re new, you might want to perfect your combat skills in the story mode first, but nothing is holding you back if you’re eager to confront the unique challenges of Days Gone’s hordes. Horde Assault brings an additional 10 hours of intense gameplay packed within an already content-rich package, promising tons of enjoyment in the world of Days Gone.
