Itch.io, the indie game platform known for its unique offerings, is gearing up for its next Creator Day set for November 29, as reported by Engadget. On this day, any money you spend goes entirely to the game developers, since itch.io will waive its usual 10% fee.
What makes this Creator Day special is its timing—it coincides with the itch.io Autumn Sale, which takes place from November 27 to December 5. This sale has attracted contributions from the site’s vibrant developer community, boasting over 7,400 projects up for grabs. Among these, you’ll find not just digital and physical games, but also assets for aspiring game creators.
The inception of Creator Day in 2021 came as a response to the financial challenges faced by developers during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was itch.io’s way of lending a helping hand to those creators.
Back then, as Spencer Hayes, itch.io’s director of business and content, shared with Polygon, “We’re supported by our awesome community every day, and we wanted to set a day where we could return the favor. It’s been hard out there for a lot of folks, and we figured we’d help out how we can.”
Though itch.io is already well-regarded for its developer-friendly revenue model—only taking a 10% cut, in contrast to platforms like Steam, the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, and Apple’s App Store—initiatives like Creator Day and various charitable events further distinguish it from the mainstream giants in the gaming market.
