Hironobu Sakaguchi, the mastermind behind the legendary Final Fantasy series, isn’t done crafting his narrative magic just yet. He’s hinted at a new game that might draw inspiration from one of the series’ most cherished installments.
Having Sakaguchi’s name on a project is a badge of distinction in the gaming world, considering his involvement in creating numerous iconic games. After starting his own studio, Mistwalker, he developed Fantasian, which recently got a re-release on consoles. Now, fans can rejoice as Sakaguchi has announced plans for yet another game. He shared insights with The Verge about Fantasian, his renewed collaboration with Square Enix, and intriguingly, a glimpse into his next venture.
While chatting, Sakaguchi revealed, “I considered making Fantasian Neo Dimension my swan song, but the phenomenal team I collaborated with made it too enjoyable to step away. Humans have an insatiable appetite for creating, don’t we? So, I’m diving into a new project with the same crew from Fantasian Neo Dimension. It will echo the style of my past work and is meant to be a worthy successor to Final Fantasy 6. The aim is to create something that feels both nostalgic and refreshing. Think of it as the second part of my farewell portfolio.”
The notion of his next project being artistically linked to Final Fantasy 6 is both a poignant and thrilling development. Final Fantasy 6 holds a special place in gamers’ hearts, not just because it was the series’ last 2D game, but also due to its sweeping, emotive storyline that left a lasting impression. Although this new game might take some time to materialize, in the interim, revisiting Final Fantasy 6 or exploring the highly praised Fantasian Neo Dimension could be a great way to fill that void.
