Creating a game tied to a massively popular intellectual property doesn’t always ensure a hit—Marvel’s Avengers and Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League can testify to that. However, it does give the endeavor a nice initial boost. With Marvel Rivals, just the idea alone set off waves of anticipation, and its beta versions have shown it’s packing a punch in the gameplay department. Now, as we edge just over a week away from its full official release, it’s cleared a major milestone—it’s gone gold.
Challenging the likes of Deadlock and Overwatch 2, Marvel Rivals is positioning itself as a strong contender for one of the top multiplayer games of 2024. Its summer beta drew over 50,000 peak players on Steam alone, hinting that the full release might shatter that figure easily.
This free-to-play hero shooter is ranking sixth on Steam’s list of the most requested games, beaten only by Path of Exile 2, Delta Force, Deadlock, Hollow Knight Silksong, and Monster Hunter Wilds. This is a promising sign that Marvel Rivals might attract a massive player base when it finally hits the shelves next week. With the confirmation that it’s gone gold and some exciting new content and gameplay improvements revealed, it’s more than ready to make a splash.
Even though the term ‘going gold’ doesn’t carry the same weight it once did in today’s gaming industry, it’s still a huge relief for fans and indicates no last-minute delays are expected, and everything is set for a smooth release.
Post-beta, Marvel Rivals hasn’t been just sitting idly. Since then, they’ve announced that both Moon Knight and Hawkeye are joining the roster of heroes that players can unlock for free, bringing the number up to an impressive 28 characters available at launch. They’re also offering complete transparency with hero stats—and eventually, pick and win rates. Additionally, three brand new maps have been unveiled: one taking place on the symbiote world of Klyntar, another in Intergalactic Wakanda, and the third inside a Hydra base.
All these features, combined with being a free-to-play model, suggest that Marvel Rivals is set for big things. Expect its official launch on Steam and consoles on Friday, December 6.
