MSI has just rolled out its latest Claw gaming handhelds, and they’re a force to be reckoned with. Both the Claw 8 AI+ and Claw 7 AI+ come equipped with Intel’s Core Ultra 7 258V processor, boasting 32GB of RAM and a maximum of a 1TB PCIe Gen4 SSD, which MSI assures is easily upgradeable. These new devices share a lot of similar features, but their screen sizes, battery life, and consequently, their dimensions, set them apart.
So, for gamers who are torn between immersive large screens and the desire for portability, you’ll find that performance isn’t compromised either way. Let’s dive into the specifics: both models utilize the same powerful processor, memory, and storage options. They also share the same integrated Intel Arc 140 GPU. The Claw 8 AI+ sports an 8-inch full HD+ touchscreen, whereas the Claw 7 AI+ comes with a slightly smaller 7-inch display. Both screens offer vivid 100% sRGB color with a 120Hz refresh rate. For audio, they pack a punch with dual 2W speakers that support Hi-Res Audio. Connectivity is rife with modern offerings like Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 on the Claw 8, whereas the Claw 7 opts for Wi-Fi 6E. Notably, input and output options on the devices are plentiful, featuring Thunderbolt 4 ports and more.
When it comes to pricing, MSI kept it under wraps during the announcement, and these handhelds are yet to appear on its US digital storefront. However, they’re up for grabs on Amazon for pre-order. The Claw 8 AI+ is tagged at $899 for the 1TB model, while the Claw 7, with its reduced 512GB storage, comes $100 cheaper at $799.
What’s particularly interesting here is MSI’s decision to go with Intel processors, setting it apart from competitors like ROG Ally X or Lenovo Legion Go, which typically use AMD chips. Additionally, MSI’s latest offerings are designed with refined controls, including new joysticks and triggers, all aimed at providing a more comfortable and precise gaming experience.
While Tencent has its own 11-inch handheld featuring the same processor in the works, it’s not expected to hit U.S. stores anytime soon. MSI’s choice of Intel’s Lunar Lake chips should provide gamers with efficient power usage. Even at a modest 17W power consumption, the Claw 8 AI+ and 7 AI+ promise 113% higher peak FPS and roughly 20% improved FPS under the same power settings.
