At today’s Triple-i Initiative indie showcase, we got our first glimpse of “Over the Hill,” the upcoming offroading game from the creators of Absolute Drift and Art of Rally, Funselektor and collaborator Strelka Games. This new title was initially announced in January, and it promises to deliver the same sleek, minimalistic art style fans have come to expect, but with a twist. If you’ve ever played SnowRunner, you’ll find “Over the Hill” somewhat similar—minus the hassle of towing trailers around. Of course, by ‘trailers,’ we mean those hitched to vehicles, not the game’s exciting previews that are sure to pique your interest.
From the gameplay trailer, which has already sparked over 200,000 Steam wishlist entries despite lacking a specific release date, “Over the Hill” appears to deliver everything you’d expect: getting all muddy, using a winch to pull yourself out of tough spots, and the thrill of it all without the real-life expense and headaches of a Land Rover that could break down at any moment.
The game allows you to embark on your off-road adventures with up to three friends in vintage vehicles that span from the 60s to the 80s, perfectly capturing the retro charm Funselektor is known for. Expect to navigate diverse landscapes, facing all kinds of weather and seasonal changes.
One of the notable aspects of the game is its minimalist interface. The mini-map is endearingly reminiscent of an old-school Ordnance Survey map your dad might awkwardly consult during a family road trip gone wrong. We also got a preview of the winching mechanics from the driver’s seat, and fans of SnowRunner will find the process pretty familiar—just choose a spot marked with a dot and start pulling.
Additionally, the game offers customization options for your rides to ensure they’re ready for any mud-fueled adventure, and a photo mode lets you immortalize those moments when you either summit a mountain or tumble down it after a miscalculation. Both scenarios seem equally worth capturing in my opinion.
