It looks like we’re bidding farewell to yet another potential game, as Project G.G. from PlatinumGames appears to be shelved before it could even catch our attention. This Ultra-Man inspired project remained largely a mystery since its announcement back in 2020. Now, with the departure of its director, Hideki Kamiya, from the studio he helped build, it seems increasingly unlikely that we’ll ever get to see it in action.
Just a quick refresher—Project G.G. might not ring a bell for everyone, and that’s understandable. After all, it was introduced a few years ago with barely any follow-up. Fast forward to late 2023, and with Kamiya exiting the company, speculation about the game’s fate became inevitable. A quick check on PlatinumGames’ website, under their portfolio section, still highlights some of their iconic creations like the Bayonetta series, NieR: Automata, and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, along with their latest title, Ninja Gaiden 4.
Interestingly, if you take a trip down memory lane using the Wayback Machine, you’ll find that the website used to showcase 22 games. This includes licensed titles like Transformers: Devastation and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, as well as their solo efforts such as MadWorld or the infamous Babylon’s Fall. The notable thing here is that even though Project G.G. was initially part of this listing, it has now vanished without a trace. Clicking its old link just loops you back to the homepage, which doesn’t bode well for its continuation.
All signs point to Project G.G. being discontinued, which isn’t too shocking considering Kamiya’s absence. PlatinumGames has had a somewhat turbulent time recently with some key staff departing, but thankfully, the announcement of the new Ninja Gaiden suggests that they aren’t closing shop just yet. For the fans eagerly waiting for what comes next, it seems their hope now lies on these upcoming projects to keep the momentum going.
