Sony Interactive Entertainment is navigating an interesting phase with its foray into multiplayer live-service games. While the PS5 celebrated a win with Helldivers 2, things took a different turn with the not-so-successful launch of Concord. Yet, it seems Sony is not backing down. They’re still eager to make waves in the live-service sector, as hinted by a recent job listing.
A new job listing from PlayStation Studios suggests they’re cooking up a fresh AAA original IP, and here’s the twist—it could be a cooperative game. The posting, which was brought to light by Tech4Gamers, is for a Game Systems Designer at their new Los Angeles studio. Similar positions had already hinted at ambitious plans, but this one offers a little more insight.
Most of the qualifications listed are what you’d typically expect. However, there’s one line that stands out: they’re looking for someone with “experience with and knowledge of cooperative multiplayer design principles and ideals.” This strongly suggests that their new project will be a co-op multiplayer game, likely putting it in the league of PlayStation’s major franchises. Beyond these hints, though, the project remains a mystery.
Back in January, we got wind of this new PlayStation studio through another job listing. Rumors flew about Jason Blundell, formerly from Call of Duty, heading up the initiative following the closure of Deviation Games in 2023. Members from his previous team confirmed they’d joined PlayStation after Blundell’s former studio was shuttered.
The rocky start of Concord has apparently prompted Sony to rethink its live-service approach. According to industry insider Jeff Grubb, Sony is now revising its lineup of live-service games. This reassessment has already led to the cancellation of several projects, including a multiplayer God of War game in development by Bluepoint Games.
