Recent data from Amazon U.S. indicates that the sales of Quest headsets during Black Friday and Cyber Monday of 2024 did not match the success seen in 2023.
According to these figures, around 170,000 Quest headsets were snapped up in the month surrounding these major shopping days in 2023. However, in 2024, that number dropped to approximately 146,000, marking a 14% decline. It’s important to note that this data may not reflect sales trends at other retailers.
This downturn is quite unexpected, especially when you consider that Meta had unveiled its enhanced Quest 3S, slashed the price of Quest 3, and presented a highly anticipated game, Batman: Arkham Shadow, right in time for Black Friday.
In 2023, Meta was still offering the older Quest 2 model. Last year, this popular headset was available for $250 with an additional $50 gift card, essentially reducing the price to $200.
At that time, it was a hit with consumers. This year, however, Meta offered the Quest 3S (128GB) model at $300, with a $75 gift card effectively bringing the cost down to $225.
While the price difference between these deals isn’t massive, and the Quest 3S does offer more value for the increased price, several factors such as economic conditions, competitive offerings, and fluctuating interest in VR technology play crucial roles in consumer decisions.
Analyzing the sales ratio of the Quest 3S to the Quest 3 during 2024’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the numbers show a 3:1 preference ratio, which is consistent with the sales dynamics between Quest 2 and Quest 3 the previous year.
