Showtime is at it again with their mission to revive Dexter, this time with a fresh prequel series titled Original Sin. Fans, brace yourselves because the first trailer has just dropped.
Though Dexter concluded over ten years ago, the current trend of reboots and capitalizing on well-loved franchises has sparked efforts to reignite the series’ popularity. In 2022, we witnessed the return of Dexter with the sequel series, Dexter: New Blood, which unfolded a decade after the original narrative. Now, Paramount and Showtime have unveiled a glimpse of the upcoming prequel, Dexter: Original Sin. Before you dive into the trailer, be aware of potential spoilers relating to the conclusion of New Blood, as intriguingly, the prequel intertwines with the sequel. Consider yourself warned!
If you watched the trailer, you saw glimpses of New Blood’s ending, where Dexter lies injured in the snow, bleeding after being shot by his son, Harrison. During his hospital stay, his life seemingly flashes before his eyes, leading us into the prequel storyline. Set in Miami back in 1991, Dexter: Original Sin portrays a young Dexter, played by Patrick Gibson, evolving from a student to a vengeful serial killer. As the official synopsis notes, when his insatiable urges become unbearable, Dexter must learn to harness his dark instincts.
With guidance from his father, Harry (played by Christian Slater), Dexter adopts a moral Code to help him target and eliminate those who deserve justice without falling under law enforcement scrutiny. This presents a unique challenge as Dexter embarks on a forensics internship with the Miami Metro Police Department.
Fans will be delighted to hear that Michael C. Hall returns as Dexter in voiceover form, and Sarah Michelle Gellar, known from Buffy, makes a guest appearance. It’s safe to say that nothing catastrophic will befall Dexter as this is a prequel, yet it promises to be an entertaining ride nonetheless.
There’s also curiosity about Dexter’s fate by the end of New Blood, with another sequel series titled Resurrection on the horizon. It’s feasible the prequel could end with Dexter waking up perfectly fine, but you’ll have to mark your calendars for December 13 when the show premieres on Paramount+ to find out.
