Developer People Can Fly and Sony Interactive Entertainment revealed today that they are teaming up to create an exciting new video game currently dubbed “Project Delta.” While the announcement is hot off the press and light on details, fans of PlayStation are buzzing with the hope that this could mark the return of the beloved SOCOM franchise.
The possibility of this partnership producing a new SOCOM game emerged thanks to a sharp-eyed member of the PS5 subreddit. They noted that People Can Fly would be collaborating with Sony on a game rooted in one of Sony’s established intellectual properties. The Polish studio has carved out a reputation for crafting intense shooters like Outriders and Gears of War: Judgment, suggesting that the choice of IP might lean towards a similar genre. Within the Reddit community, many are leaning towards SOCOM as the most likely candidate. Other names being tossed around include Killzone, Resistance, and Warhawk.
One user confidently speculated, “It has to be either SOCOM or Killzone since this company mostly makes shooters. Resistance seems like a strong guess too.”
Another chimed in, expressing a desire for Warhawk’s return, declaring, “Wouldn’t mind seeing a reboot of Warhawk. That game had the Fortnite potential before Fortnite. Sony just kinda failed to really capitalize on it.”
With some fervor, another Redditor expressed, “Please God, let it be Resistance.”
All this, of course, is pure speculation for now. There’s even a playful suggestion that this could be a third-person shooter featuring Knack. Regardless, it might be quite some time before we get a full reveal.
For those who might not remember, SOCOM was a celebrated third-person tactical shooter series that debuted on the PS2 and had several titles across the PS3 and PSP platforms. The franchise’s last installment was SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs, released in 2011. Upon launch, it garnered a mixed bag of reviews, scoring an average rating of 67 across 64 critiques on Metacritic. Since then, the series has been on an extended hiatus.
