Snap, the company behind the popular social media app Snapchat, is shaking things up by making their latest Spectacles AR Glasses more accessible. They’ve introduced an educational discount that slashes the initial $1,200 price tag in half, a move that aims to make these innovative glasses more affordable for students and teachers.
Unveiled back in September 2024, Snap’s fifth-generation of Spectacles, known as Spectacles ’24, are primarily geared towards developers. Typically, they cost $100 per month with a one-year commitment.
The latest iteration of Snap’s AR glasses has seen some notable improvements over the fourth-generation model that came out in 2021. Users now enjoy a wider field-of-view, enhanced resolution, and new hand-tracking capabilities. Not to mention, there’s been a complete overhaul of the software stack. Despite these advancements, the high price has been a hurdle for students and educators eager to explore the world of augmented reality apps.
Aiming to clear this financial barrier, Snap has introduced a student discount. Now, the Spectacles are available at $49.50 a month for the first year, after which the same monthly rate applies for continued usage. Alternatively, you can opt for a single payment of $594 for the first 12 months, then $49.50 per month after that.
To be eligible for this discount, you will need a .edu email address or one from another accredited educational institution. The offer is open to students and teachers in supported countries, including the US, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Austria, and the Netherlands.
