We haven’t caught much wind about Sony’s SRH-S1 standalone mixed reality headset over the past year since the company gave us a sneak peek at CES 2024. However, it looks like the wait is over, as this business-oriented gadget is set to make its official debut soon, with both a launch date and a price tag now confirmed.
Partnering with Siemens, the aptly named Sony SRH-S1 is gearing up for its release in February 2025, carrying a price of $4,750. This move signals a clear focus on enterprise markets. You can start placing orders on January 23, 2025, straight through Siemens.
Initially pitched last year with creatives in mind, Sony and Siemens have shifted to target the industrial sector. They’re emphasizing the SRH-S1’s potential to “enable the industrial metaverse,” aiming to enhance product design and manufacturing processes using Siemens’ high-fidelity mixed reality tools.
Sporting Sony’s own ECX344A OLED microdisplays, the headset offers an impressive 13.6MP (3,552 × 3840) resolution per eye. It’s powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset. Sony is also introducing what they refer to as a “proprietary rendering technology” for real-time 3D object creation.
As for its mixed reality capabilities, the SRH-S1 features passthrough video and a flip-up visor. Sony has designed a unique pair of ergonomic controllers meant for intuitive 3D interactions, which come in the shape of a stylus-type pointer and ring.
Siemens has been busy too. Over the last year, they’ve polished their enterprise-centric Immersive Engineering tools. These are designed to let SRH-S1 users create 3D assets in CAD, interact with models, and even conduct remote multi-user design reviews via the Siemens cloud-based NX X platform.
Discussing this collaboration, Bob Haubrock, Senior VP of Product Engineering Software at Siemens Digital Industries Software, remarked, “After our CES preview last year, our teams have crafted tools that are reshaping mixed reality usage in engineering—supporting global collaboration with precision 3D models, and enabling direct co-creation on crucial 3D CAD data in a secure, managed environment.”
On a related note, Sony also announced the upcoming launch of a creative-focused headset for prosumers, named XYN, at CES this week. Details on pricing or a release date for XYN remain under wraps. It’s still a prototype, but early thoughts suggest it could be a variant of the SRH-S1, differentiated by its black design compared to the SRH-S1’s grey aesthetics.
