Disney has finally unveiled a sneak peek of Stitch in the upcoming live-action remake of Lilo and Stitch, and it’s stirred up a bit of mixed feelings.
Just last week, we got a glimpse of another cherished animated classic that’s making the leap to live-action, How to Train Your Dragon. Now, Disney is stepping into the spotlight with their own venture. The teaser dropped yesterday, giving us a 30-second taste of the chaos Stitch is up to. One standout scene features him embracing his inner Godzilla, delightfully toppling a sandcastle akin to the iconic Disney castle, along with some other unsuspecting sand structures. Apart from a brief interaction where our CGI friend meets a void to showcase the release date — mark your calendars, it’s May 23, 2025 — there’s little else to glean from this initial sneak preview. It’s minimalist, to say the least!
The film’s official description sounds like it’s sticking close to the roots of the original. It follows “the bond formed between a lonely human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, who is engineered to be a force of destruction.” Familiar talent Chris Sanders returns to lend his voice to Stitch, while Dean Fleischer Camp, known for Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, takes the director’s chair.
As for the cast, new talent Maia Kealoha steps into the role of Lilo, while Sydney Agudong (best recognized from On My Block) plays her older sister, Nani. Zach Galifianakis, famed for The Hangover, voices Jumba, with Billy Magnussen (Game Night) as Pleakley. Additionally, Hannah Waddingham from Ted Lasso joins the ensemble in a yet-to-be-disclosed role, though many are betting she’s portraying the Grand Councilwoman.
With the release less than a year away, a full trailer is likely on the horizon. Meanwhile, Disney has packed this holiday season with flavor, as they gear up for significant earnings with the release of Moana 2, hitting theaters this week.
