Alta is making waves once again in the gaming world, building on the success of A Township Tale by delving deeper into the development of their upcoming project REAVE. This dungeon-crawler extraction game is shaping up to be quite the adventure, as highlighted in their latest update revealing new mechanics, a fresh dungeon, and formidable enemies—all still under development.
The team’s recent developers’ log, as detailed below, showcases a multitude of refined systems and expansive areas, notably ‘The Fallen Bastion.’ This location stands out as the game’s largest room to date.
"In our hands here is a mix of wide-open expanses, narrow passages, along with areas that vary from well-lit to utterly dark—perfect for ambushes on unsuspecting players or sneaking past foes," explained Sean Ellis, the lead environment artist.
A fascinating feature in this zone is a mystical pedestal. It’s designed to call forth a boss battle, currently featuring a giant spider as a placeholder, allowing the team to fine-tune the mechanics of these epic confrontations.
“Don’t fret, the spider is just temporary. It aids us in fine-tuning authentic boss battles while we craft something more specialized,” the studio assures fans.
Previously showcased areas aren’t being left behind either. They are undergoing extensive updates, with the possibility of some being completely remodeled in the future, according to the latest developer insights.
In a preview of battles to come, Alta introduced a new enemy model, poised to replace older skeleton models. These adversaries will vary in difficulty based on their equipment, adding an extra layer of challenge.
REAVE, true to its extraction game nature, revolves heavily around an in-game currency known as ‘Echoes’—a name that might eventually change. Players collect Echoes as they progress, allowing them to engage in encounters, discover treasures, and ultimately extract from dungeons. Once back in the social hub, they can sell their hard-earned loot.
Gamers eager to get involved might have the opportunity to jump into the action early by joining the game’s Discord community, which occasionally opens up testing slots. While Alta hasn’t announced a release date yet, they have confirmed the game will be available on Quest 2 and newer models, as well as PC VR headsets.
