Here’s another contender in the world of high-tech eyewear, and it comes bearing the ‘Vision’ name, too.
While you might not find Vivo on the tip of everyone’s tongue, this Chinese company has built a solid reputation for crafting quality mid-range smartphones. It consistently makes the top five in global market share for smartphone makers.
Recently, at the Boao Forum for Asia held in Hainan Province, Vivo unveiled its first foray into the XR (Extended Reality) segment: the Vivo Vision.
In their press release, Vivo mentioned that this move aligns with their broader ambitions to delve into robotics and XR technologies. The Vivo Vision is touted as a “significant milestone in vivo’s exploration of mixed reality technology.”
An image courtesy of GSM Arena showcases the new device, though details on the Vivo Vision are still under wraps. We’re left guessing about its specs, operating system, launch date, international availability, and price, among other details.
However, visitors at the Boao Forum got a sneak peek at Vivo’s showcase booth. The prototype on display suggests that it’s borrowing several design elements from the Apple Vision Pro. This includes its distinctive headstrap design, a digital crown button, and a magnetically-attached external battery.
Vivo’s existing smartphone lineup runs on customized Android systems—Funtouch OS for global devices, and Origin OS for those within China. So, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Vivo decides to adopt Google’s forthcoming Android XR OS for their new device. This platform is also expected to debut with Samsung’s mixed reality project, ‘Project Moohan,’ due out later this year—though, of course, that’s still speculation at this point.
The Vivo Vision is part of an emerging trend where Chinese manufacturers roll out Vision Pro look-alikes. Earlier this year, another notable entrant from Play for Dream made waves at CES 2025. Their MR headset not only caught everyone’s attention but also received glowing reviews from former Quest engineer Amanda Watson, who hailed it as “absolutely the best all-around HMD demo I saw on the floor today.”
