Microsoft is shaking things up with its latest Windows 11 update, especially in how Task Manager handles CPU monitoring. The new changes aim to bring its functionality more in line with popular third-party applications.
Enhancing Task Manager’s CPU Tracking to Match Third-Party Tools
Microsoft appears to have realized that Task Manager’s existing performance metrics are somewhat lacking when compared to offerings from third-party solutions. Responding to this, they’ve decided to roll out an update that tweaks how CPU utilization numbers are calculated, aligning more closely with industry standards. This change promises to significantly bolster Task Manager’s effectiveness.
As part of these updates, Microsoft announced, "We are beginning to roll out a change to the way Task Manager calculates CPU utilization for the Processes, Performance, and Users pages. Task Manager will now use the standard metrics to display CPU workload consistently across all pages and align with industry standards and third-party tools."
Although the precise details of these new calculations remain under wraps, one clear takeaway is that the numbers displayed on Task Manager’s Processes, Performance, and Users pages will now mirror those shown in external apps. This should resolve any discrepancies users might have faced and make relying on native tools more feasible. Task Manager could very well replace the need for third-party applications like HWINFO, which many have depended on for accurate CPU monitoring. However, we’ll need to stay tuned for when this update is fully rolled out.

Additionally, for those who are fond of the current method Task Manager uses, there’s a bit of good news. Microsoft is introducing a new ‘CPU Utility’ column on the "Details" tab, making it easy for users who prefer the old way to stick with it. These updates are part of Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.3360 from the 24H2 update series, suggesting that the changes will gradually become available to more users. It’s reassuring to see Microsoft putting in the effort to enhance the user experience and better meet consumer needs.
